Breaking it Down to Basics
First, let's take a quick look at the trims, their MSRPs, and fuel efficiency so that we have a starting point for our comparison.

Of the 6 engines to choose from, most end up being optional on all trims, save for the 3.5 L V6 engine for the Raptor and Limited. Personally, we find that the best middle of the road engine options are the 2.7 L V6, the 3.5L V6, or the 3.0 L V6 turbodiesel in terms of capabilities and extra cost.
Important Factors to Consider
When trying to decide between trim levels, it helps to make a list of what you need your pickup for. Do you own a boat or a trailer that you'll need to be hauling? Are you planning on using this as a work pickup? What about off-roading? Your needs will help determine what trim is best for your lifestyle. Obviously, if you're an off-road enthusiast, you'll want to seriously consider the Raptor. If you're looking for a high-end pickup for the farm, choose the King Ranch. The Platinum and Limited trims are really nice for people who are going to be spending a lot of time on the road - think hauling a trailer on a cross-country road trip. They're luxurious, so if you're not fussy about interiors accoutrements and want to get a great deal, try a trim level like the XLT which is virtually the same as the XL with one more engine option.

You'll notice that we haven't mentioned the Lariat yet. This trim falls right in the middle of the price range for the Ford F-150 and has arguably the best fuel efficiency which is important to note when factoring in the rising prices at the pumps. The standard engine option is the 2.7 L EcoBoost with 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a 10-speed transmission with an upper block and cylinders that are made of the same high-strength compacted graphite iron used in the Super Duty 6.7 L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel.
Of course, like all F-150 trims, the Lariat comes with an 8-inch LCD productivity screen to provide you with useful information such as fuel economy and towing data. This is standard in the Lariat, unlike the lower-level trims where it'll cost extra.
