Ford F-150 Safety & Reliability Ratings

Ford F-150 Safety & Reliability Ratings

Whether you’re heading off to work in Winnipeg or taking in one of the wildlife trails in your next off-road adventure, you want to drive a truck equipped with the most modern safety technology. Many pickups offer safety technology suites, but in the F-150, drivers can safely deal with the toughest trails or jobs, knowing they are supported by the latest modern safety technology. Learn more about the F-150's safety & reliability in this article by River City Ford!

IIHS Rating

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a reputable organization responsible for testing the safety of vehicles. The 2023 F-150 was a 2022 Top Safety Pick in the Large Pickup / Crew Cab Pickup category. A Top Safety Pick annually identifies the best vehicle safety options within various size categories. It’s awarded after exhaustive testing in several fields, including accident avoidance technology, crash testing and headlight capability.

A vehicle needs a combination of active and passive safety features to succeed. Passive safety features protect the occupants of a vehicle during a collision and minimize injury to them. Active features work to prevent an accident from happening.

Passive Safety

The F-150 has three major passive safety features.

Airbags: The F-150 has a full set of airbags. There are six airbags situated in front, on the sides and a side-curtain.

Seatbelts: The F-150 has three-point seatbelts with tensioners that hold passengers securely in their seats in the event of an accident.

Construction and Crumple Zone: The F-150 body is manufactured from an aluminum alloy that is strong enough to resist a powerful impact. When the impact exceeds the bodywork limits, crumple zones are designed to absorb the impact and prevent passenger injury.

Active Safety

Active Safety

Most of the safety technology for the F-150 is contained in a group called the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite. It’s a collection of driver assistance aids that boost driver confidence by giving alerts and warnings or actively adjusting the steering or braking. Let’s discover what’s in the safety suite.

Pre-Collision Assistance with Automatic Emergency Braking scans the road ahead of you for any potential hazards. When it identifies a pedestrian or another vehicle as a potential danger, it will issue an alert and activate the brakes to avoid a crash.

Blind Spot Information with Cross-Traffic Alert will help you confidently reverse and change lanes. An indicator light in your side mirror will come on if traffic is approaching from either side when reversing. The same indicator light will alert you to a car moving into your blind spot when you want to change lanes.

The Lane-Keeping System will assist in keeping to your lane and warn you if you drift close to the lane markings without putting your indicator on. The driver can use an aid mode, where the steering is automatically used to gently guide the car back into the centre of the lane, or alert mode, where the steering wheel will vibrate to warn the driver to move back to the lane centre.

Adaptive Cruise Control is an enhanced version of cruise control. The software will maintain your speed and a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you. If the vehicle ahead slows down, your car will also slow or come to a complete stop if that is required.

Evasive Steering Assist will help you steer safely around a stationary vehicle or a slower vehicle driving in the same direction. A Rear View Camera assists with reversing accurately and makes hitching up a trailer very simple.

Post-collision Braking is automatically applied. Moderate braking is carried out when a collision is detected, slowing the vehicle even though a crash has occurred. It has the potential to reduce the severity of injuries and damage.

Auto High-Beam Headlamps will automatically change the headlight beam from high to low, depending on the conditions. It ensures the driver always has the best possible light condition under which to drive. Active Park Assist 2.0 will parallel park your F-150 for you. As you press the button, the car will do the parking, steering, gear shifts, acceleration and braking.
