Ford Maverick vs Ranger | Which one is right for you?

Ford Maverick vs Ranger | Which one is right for you?

Over the past three years, Ford has started to beef up its truck lineup with the return of the Ford Ranger and addition of the Ford Maverick, not to mention its all-electric F-150 Lightning model. The addition of the Ranger and the Maverick into the lineup has allowed Ford to appeal to a new demographic of drivers--those who want a pickup truck's capability without sacrificing car-like space and quality.

The Ford Ranger and Ford Maverick

The Ford Ranger is a mid-size pickup truck that provides stout capability, plenty of technology, and more efficiency than full-size pickup trucks.

The Ford Maverick is a small pickup truck that offers a more car-like driving experience but with an exceptional full hybrid powertrain and adequate towing and hauling capability.

Models and Pricing

Starting at $33,923, the Ford Ranger is offered in three model variations across Canada: XL, XLT, and Lariat.

The Ford Maverick is also offered in the XL, XLT, and Lariat models. Starting at $25,900, it is the first standard full hybrid pickup truck available in Canada.

Capability

For drivers wanting off-roading capability, the Ford Ranger is the truck of choice. It is built for serious off-road travel with 8.9 inches of ground clearance for capable navigation on uneven territory. In addition, the Ford Ranger can become an ultimate off-road vehicle with the available Tremor Off-Road Package, which includes magnetic-painted alloy wheels, skid plate, off-road suspension, front and rear tow hooks, and more. Drivers can tow up to 3,401kg when appropriately equipped.

The Ford Maverick offers capability in a completely different way. Designed for use on the roadways instead of the trails, the Maverick is Ford's first fully hybrid pickup truck. It offers an exceptional 5.9 L/100km city fuel consumption in addition to its 680kg payload and 1,133kg towing capacities.

Interior

The mid-size Ford Ranger offers a more traditional truck look in its interior. It mixes materials across the dashboard areas, which features an in-set touchscreen infotainment system with user-friendly controls. The Ranger requires a significant step up to get into the driver's seat, which provides a taller seating and driving position, as well as view of the road.

On the other hand, the Maverick features a more modern design with distinctive style. The touchscreen infotainment system is placed higher on the dashboard with a prominent spot for all to see and that provides easy access to drivers. Weird for a truck, drivers actually have to step down slightly to get into the driver's seat, with its seating position more resembling a compact SUV than a truck.

Maverick vs Ranger - The Verdict

There is no right or wrong choice in the Maverick vs Ranger debate. Ford offers two capable and fun smaller trucks for drivers that do not need the capability of a full-size pickup truck. For drivers that need more capability, the Ranger is the best option thanks to its 3,401kg maximum towing capacity. For drivers that want more interior comfort and a car-like driving experience, the Maverick is probably the best choice. Both are appealing trucks that were great additions to Ford's model lineup.
