How Fast is the New Mustang Mach-E?

How Fast is the New Mustang Mach-E?

Development in the EV market continues at a dizzying pace. Where once all the talk was of range anxiety and questionable performance, today's best electric vehicles can easily outshine their traditional gas-guzzling cousins. One of the latest models on the market is the new Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, which aims to push the performance envelope to new extremes for street-legal electric vehicles.

How impressive is this new Ford, in terms of both raw specs and real-world performance? Read our Mustang Mach-E review to find out.

Mustang Mach-E Specs

As with most EVs, Mach-E's powertrain is built around dual electric motors, one for each axle. As you'd expect from this configuration, the car is all-wheel drive all the time.

The combined output of the dual motors is impressive, with horsepower standing at a healthy 346hp. However, it's in the torque where the car really shines, with the impressive 428lb-ft benefiting from the 'instant twist' character of electric designs to provide powerful thrust right from a standing start.

Mach-E Speed Measurements

All this power shows up in some impressive speed and acceleration figures. The benchmark 0-100km/h figure is reached in a lively 4.8 seconds, putting the Mach-E firmly in the ballpark of the best EV performers over this distance. What's more, the Mustang continues powering down the track to reach the 400m mark in just 13.4 seconds, by which time the SUV has reached an impressive 166.6km/h.

However, it's well worth noting that Ford plans an upgraded Mach-E GT model to follow shortly, pushing the horsepower up to 480hp and pulling the 0-100km/h figure down to a mere 3.8 seconds.

Responsive Handling

However, all the power in the world means nothing if a car handles like a tank. Thankfully, the Mach-E has some extremely impressive and agile characteristics that put all the output to great use. The powerful brakes have a bite and deliver an assured feel, ensuring the driver remains in total control. In deceleration tests, the Mustang Mach-E slowed from 100km/h to a dead halt in a shade over 33 meters, without any worrying amounts of nose dip or other deviations from the straight and narrow.

Lastly, the quoted lateral acceleration is a healthy 0.85g, giving precise control in cornering without demanding too much from the driver to correct understeer or oversteer.

If you're in the market for an SUV that packs plenty of electric punch under the hood, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E deserves a very close look indeed.
